BLUEGRASS BBQ

2011 UPDATE TO THIS POST: The last couple of times I ate here, the meat was tough and I can no longer recommend Bluegrass BBQ.

There's several things that I love to eat....well, probably lots more than several....but anyway, the perfect BBQ is always at the top of my list. And when I say BBQ, I mean chopped pork on a bun with slaw.

Recently I've had what I consider the best BBQ sandwich in Upstate SC and it is at this little roadside stand, Bluegrass BBQ, on Highway 101 just down from the Barnyard Flea Market. The meat has a great smoke taste, their sauce has just a slight kick and their slaw adds to the flavor instead of distracting from the sandwich. They're open Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

We've got our sandwiches to go both times we have stopped by, but they have a few picnic tables if you want to eat there.

Please let me know what you think of Bluegrass BBQ (good or bad). We all have our preferences.

Went out there a few weeks back (on a Thursday afternoon) and they weren't there!

I have since seen them, though, on St. Mark's Road in Taylors. They might be splitting their time between both locations. I promise to hit 'em next week and check up on what's goin' on.

Last time we were up that way, they had moved into Barnyard and had run out of BBQ.

Someone else said they saw them on Wade Hampton last week also. St. Mark's isn't very far from me. IF you see them this week, please let me know.

I've read about a place in Spartanburg that says they serve NC style. I think it is at the Chesnee Hwy Exit.

Worst BBQ I have had around here was Hubba Hubba in Flat Rock.

Do you have a favorite BBQ?

I agree that Hubba Bubba stinks horribly!

There've been several locations open in the Greer area recently and I haven't had the opportunity to try any of them yet, but I'll let you know as soon as I do.

I like Henry's Smokehouse (on Wade Hampton in Greenville) and, for variety's sake, Smokin' Stokes (on Augusta Road).

Barbecue is weird in these parts, though, as it's not something that the Upstate really has a history with (and the history that we have is, of course, rather Tomato Based).

From The Lowcountry up to Columbia, South Carolina tends to enjoy Mustard Based Sauce. Central North Carolina is famous for their Vinegar Based Sauce. North Georgia has a wide variety of sauces (Mustard, Tomato, Vinegar, Coca Cola... They ain't so particular), but they're all good.

The Upstate of South Carolina is surrounded by by the best Barbecue in the world and has only recently expressed much of an interest in it. 'Bout time they came around!

LOL! The Google/Blogger Word Verification for this particular post is "fartlers".

I agree Henry's is the best BBQ in Greenville. I think they have the best smoke taste in their meat. However, I more often than not go to Bucky's, because I like their sauces better, even knowing that sauce doesn't make a BBQ.

Have you ever tried Greer BBQ, just off the highway? It's an odd BBQ. The sauce is all mixed in and as I eat it, I always think, this isn't that good, but several days later I'll crave another one. I think they put something addictive in their sandwich :-)

I've eaten bbq all over Upstate Sc, and while I appreciate the efforts to
cook with wood, the best bbq I've still ever had was Wilber's BBQ in
Goldsboro NC.

BBQ Dave: I don't get up to that part of NC very often. My favorite BBQ at this time is Bubba's in Spartanburg and they cook with fire not wood. Mike and Jeff's here in Greenville is pretty close to Bubba's. Both places need NO sauce, the meat speaks for itself.
